"Retention! Retention! Retention! Those are the only metrics I am obsessed with these days," Asif said after one of his work calls. Late last year, I experienced an internet outage at my home. I decided to go to Asif's place to take a few zoom calls. During breaks between meetings, Asif and I shared our experiences with improving customer retention and noticed similarities in the problem statements we were tackling at work.
As we started talking, we were surprised to learn that our takeaways about GTM strategies, processes, and product development in SaaS were relevant to each other despite working in different functions. For context, Asif is a growth-focused PM and I am a Customer Success-aligned BizOps Manager. As the conversation shifted to our career trajectories, we realized the resources we were looking for were hard to come by online. At the same time, we had just learned a ton from each other in a one-hour conversation. His experience across multiple SaaS businesses - Social Impact Tech, EdTech, CRM, and Observability, and mine across Consumer Tech and HR Tech - gave us insights into varied GTM strategies, community development activities, incentive structures, customer segments, and investor structures. We also knew that to continue to level up and grow businesses at exceptional growth rates, we needed to surface and highlight such hidden experiences and insights from other growth focussed SaaS leaders.
From surveys and user interviews with many of our peers, we noticed that they were also facing similar issues with access to resources. As we kept thinking about what we wanted to do about it, we knew we wanted to bring others along for the ride (and have more conversations like the first one we did) - which meant building a community. We strongly believe that it's important to bubble up more stories - not just the big picture view, but actual, real examples of things that worked. There are so many small nuggets in each of our minds and experiences that are hard to get to unless you're having those conversations - or building a community.
So that's what this is - Our attempt to offer resources and build a community of SaaS GTM leaders who have the right resources, tools, direction, and purpose as they're leveling up in their careers and accelerating their businesses.
